RESIDENCY INTERVIEW PRACTICE QUESTIONS

Here are some common interview questions that I practiced for prior to my interviews:


  1. Tell me about yourself (variations: summarize your life story in a few minutes, what led you here, tell me about your medical journey)

  2. Why did you choose this specialty?

  3. Why do you want to attend this program?

  4. What are you strengths?

  5. What are your weaknesses?

  6. What are qualities of a leader?

  7. How do you deal with stress?

  8. How do you take constructive criticism/feedback?

  9. How well do you give feedback?

  10. Tell me about a time you dealt with a stressful situation

  11. Tell me about a time you dealt with a challenging situation in the hospital

  12. Tell me about a time you made a hard decision

  13. Tell me about a time you successfully dealt with conflict with a patient

  14. Tell me about a time you made a mistake with patient care and how you solved it

  15. Tell me about a time you disagreed with a resident or attending

  16. Tell me about a time you overcame a failure

  17. Tell me about a time you showed leadership skills

  18. Tell me about a time you worked in a team

  19. Tell me about a time you worked in an interdisciplinary team during rounds and how it affected patient care

  20. How is healthcare different in Canada/US, what are positives and negatives to each?

  21. What aisle would I find you in the grocery store?

  22. What is your favourite thing to eat for dinner?

  23. If you had a chance to give a Ted Talk, what would you talk about?

  24. How has Covid-19 impacted your medical school experience and what did you learn from it?

  25. If you were not a doctor, what career would you choose?

  26. If you had to apply to another specialty which one would it be?

  27. What was your least favorite rotation and why?


Important Tips:


- Please remember to search the residency programs website before the interview. Find unique aspects of the program to talk about during the "why this program" question.


- Know who will be interviewing you (schedule sent at least 1 day prior to the interview)


- Send a thank you e-mail if they do not say against it at the end of the interview day
